This autumn, the local climate initiative CoAction is organising a cycling challenge, in which employees are encouraged to swap the car, bus or train for a bike ride. 85 people from Lund University signed up for the challenge and are now cycling to work.

‘Cykelsprånget’ is a joint challenge for those who work in Lund and do not usually cycle to work. For six weeks participants must cycle at least three days a week. They also complete questionnaires before and after the challenge and receive a cycling-themed gift pack. The aim is to make it easier to try out cycling to work and to explore how commuting by bike can affect everyday life, well-being and the city around us.

Here's what some of the participants have to say about the challenge

Erik Andersson, LTH:

“It feels like a great opportunity to get back into cycle commuting, after a couple of years away from it. Cycling gives me a wonderful sense of freedom, and the uphill ride into Lund gives me an energy boost in the morning! I cycle with my wife, and we support each other when the wind is against us. We have a 13-kilometre commute to work.”

Pernilla Daws, LTH:

“I just need a little push to get started. I hope that a month of cycling will help me establish a new habit that lasts. It’s just over three kilometres to work, with great cycle paths the whole way. I enjoy the peace and quiet and the greenery along the route.”

Åsa Forsberg, Lund University Library

“This challenge gives me the extra motivation I need to cycle instead of automatically getting into the car out of habit. I’m cycling between our home and the train station in Höör, a distance of just under 10 kilometres.”

Anna-Karin Ekenberg, Lund University Library

"I want to make cycling my default mode of transport instead of taking the car, mainly for the exercise and recovery it provides in everyday life."

Pernilla Sjöström, Lund University Library

“I cycle between the University Library and Möllevångstorget in Malmö. In the morning, I bring my bike on the train and then cycle home in the afternoon. It’s been great so far! As long as the weather is reasonably good, it doesn't feel particularly demanding, and I always feel much better afterwards."
