Business travel fell in 2020

Travel at the University has transformed during this pandemic year. Compared with last year, air travel fell by 97% and the number of Teams and Zoom accounts skyrocketed.

For several years, the University has been working to increase the proportion of travel-free meetings to reduce CO2 emissions caused by travel. This was a prioritised goal in the environmental action plan 2017–2019 and the University forms part of the REMM collaboration project – Resfria/digitala möten i myndigheter (Virtual Meetings in Public Agencies).

These efforts were given a powerful boost as the coronavirus pandemic swept across the globe. International travel became almost impossible and those who had never used digital meeting services before had to learn quickly. The number of flights booked between April and October 2020 fell by 97% compared with 2019. Based on average emissions of previous travel, this means a reduction in CO2 of around 3 400 tonnes. Total emissions for 2020 will be reported in February 2021.
