Coronavirus at Lund University

The Lund University crisis management group is continuously monitoring the situation concerning the corona/covid-19 in dialogue with other authorities and parties. Lund University is also in consultation with Region Skåne’s Centre for Communicable Disease Control (Smittskydd Skåne) concerning the measures required to prevent the spread of infection.

“I have great understanding for the concern in the community and at the University as a whole, but we are working very actively on the matter”, says university director Susanne Kristensson, who is leading the work on the coronavirus in the university management.

A significant part of the crisis management group’s work concerns national and international monitoring. The group’s joint assessment is the basis for the decisions taken by the university management.

“The overall assessment is that the activities at Lund University can continue as normal, with certain travel restrictions, and this assessment will be continuously re-evaluated”, says Susanne Kristensson.

On 3 March, the first case in Skåne was confirmed, a student at Lund University who contracted covid-19, following a trip to northern Italy. As more people in Sweden have returned from regions with confirmed outbreaks, more staff and students may be, or have already been, contacted in the process of tracing contact. Measures to limit the spread of infection are being taken by Region Skåne in dialogue with involved parties. Lund University’s central crisis management group will not comment on the health of individuals in any way in respect of the individual’s privacy.

Contract tracing means that staff at Region Skåne communicate directly with individuals known to have had contact with the student in question, either in a study/work environment or housing setting. Region Skåne is cooperating with Lund University and other involved parties on the case confirmed at Lund University and any that may be detected in the future.

“Lund University has absolute confidence in the Centre for Communicable Disease Control’s work on tracing contact and we are acting on their advice. Our task is to do what is required to facilitate their work”, says Susanne Kristensson.

Students and staff are recommended to stay updated on the University’s management on the internal website, Staff Pages.
