The university director has decided to change the Division of External Relations into a new division, Global Engagement, which will have a more explicit focus on international matters. The decision is based on an overview of the University’s organisation and working methods carried out in 2023.

With the support of the Global Dynamic Engagement (GDE) initiative, there is a desire to create conditions to increase international impact in research, education, innovation and external engagement. A stronger international presence is strategic for the University, and by bringing together international matters in a dedicated division, it is hoped to achieve this goal more efficiently.

“We are already seeing positive results from our more focused work through the GDE initiative, which shows that the strategic and targeted efforts concerning international matters that the University has worked on for a few years is now producing concrete results in the form of new agreements and collaborations with attractive and sometimes completely new international environments,” says Richard Stenelo, the new head of division.

The new Division of Global Engagement starts operating on 1 April and its main task is to provide support and services to the University Management, faculties and students in order to strengthen and develop the University’s international presence. The division will be based at Wrangel.

Global Engagement is to develop and implement international strategies through initiatives such as GDE, Global Responsible Engagement (GRE) and Global Sustainable Engagement (GSE). According to Richard Stenelo, stronger partnerships with leading universities and institutions around the world will offer unique experiences and resources that enrich the University’s academic environment and contribute to its development.

The new division will take over most of the activities of External Relations, while certain tasks and functions will move to Corporate Communication. The division will also be responsible for:

  • Processes in Erasmus+ and the European alliance EUGLOH
  • The LERU and U21 networks
  • Global initiatives and projects
  • Student recruitment to international programmes and issues relating to tuition fees and scholarships
  • The University’s alumni relations
  • International student mobility, scholarship management and migration matters
  • Student reception for international students

New organisation

The Global Engagement section will be led by Richard Stenelo, who will become Head of Division together with Deputy Head of Division Margareta Nordstrand, and there will be two divisions with heads of section and two groups reporting to the Head of Division:

  • Networks and Alumni Relations, Head of office Susanne Norrman
  • Mobility and Student Experience, Head of office Marie Herner Hällström

  • Strategic Engagement (reporting directly to the Head of Division)
  • Student Recruitment, Group Head Maria Lindblad
