Important information on Windows 10 for PC users, some tips on Outlook to simplify your work processes and a reminder about strong authentication.

Important information for those using Windows 10 on a PC

This only affects PC users.

Microsoft’s support for Windows 10 will cease on 14 October 2025. After that date, the operative system will no longer receive security updates, which means increased risks for computers still using Windows 10.

If you still use Windows 10 and are uncertain about what you should do, contact Servicedesk or your local IT organisation for guidance.

How to find out which version of Windows you are using:

  • Right-click on the Start menu and select System.
  • Under Windows specifications you can see which edition and version is running on your unit.

Changes in the Office package for University associates

This only applies to University associates without email authorisation who have access to the Office package apps on the desktop. Employees of Lund University are not affected by this, but it is a good idea to pass on the information to those it concerns.

As of Tuesday 2 September, Microsoft will begin to remove the option to use the Office package apps on the desktop for a certain type of licence. Regarding Lund University, this applies to University associates without email authorisation who use the University’s Microsoft 365 service and affects a total of approximately 1,700 accounts.

If you have one of the 1,700 accounts, follow this procedure to access the complete Microsoft 365 service:

  • Log in here: m365.cloud.microsoft
  • Use your LU account to log in. You will then access Word, Excel and all the other apps included in the old Office package.

The change will be implemented step by step, but unfortunately we have not received any information on exactly when it will be introduced, only that it will be 2 September at the earliest.

If you have any questions, contact Servicedesk at servicedesk [at] lu [dot] se.

Smart tips: Switch between email and calendar

For Outlook users there is an easy way to switch between email, calendar and other features – without opening more windows.

Follow these steps:

  1. When you are in Outlook and want to go to email, press:
For PC: Ctrl + 1 or
    For Mac: command + 1.
  2. Or if you want to go to the calendar, press:
For PC: Ctrl + 2 or
    For Mac: command + 2.
  3. Ctrl or command + 3 takes you to Contacts.
  4. Ctrl or command + 4 takes you to Microsoft To Do or Tasks.

Reminder: Activate strong authorisation

Among LU employees, 38% still do not have strong authentication. During the autumn, it will be introduced for most of the major IT services. If you have not already activated it, do it now.

As of 15 September, strong authentication will be needed to use services such as: Primula, Proceedo/Kommers, Kompetensportalen, PaperCut, Kuben and many more.

This means you will not be able to report sick leave, print documents, order goods, book courses etc. if you have not activated strong authentication.
