The joy of carnival – student life as part of our very essence

Soon, Lund will be filled with anticipation, colour and the glitz of the carnival. The Lund Carnival is fast approaching – with skits, singing, satire and that very special blend of camaraderie and madness that only the carnival can create. In workshops and rehearsal rooms, new memories are being made: lines are being polished, sets are being built, and laughter echoes far beyond the carnival area.

The carnival reminds us that the University is not just lecture theatres and labs, but also a vibrant place where ideas, courage and joy are given free rein.

Student life is one of Lund University’s greatest assets. It shapes our culture, our identity and our ability to attract new students (and staff) – from Sweden and around the world. Commitment, traditions and curiosity are part of our very essence and a key factor in the appeal that makes Lund unique. The carnival, which takes place every four years, is the highlight of our student life. When student initiatives and our shared learning environment come together, the result is something greater than the sum of its parts.

I am also particularly pleased that the carnival committee, on my initiative and in collaboration with Visit Lund, has revived the charter section. The section had been dormant since 1994, the year in which I was involved in the carnival. This time, students from Uppsala travelling on a specially chartered coach will have the chance to experience the Lund Carnival in person, at the best university. Being able to share our traditions and our Celestial Carnival spirit with students from another prestigious university in Sweden feels both enjoyable and important – it builds bridges and strengthens the academic community.

I hope you will take the time to soak up the carnival atmosphere – and that, in your own way, you will feel proud of the student life that makes Lund University what it is. See you out there!
