The strategy includes a vision and strategic goals for Lund University’s Strategic Research Areas (SRAs) for the period 2020 to 2030. The allocation of roles and responsibilities is stated for future work. The strategy is based on the University’s collective knowledge and experience of development and governance of these environments, from the first strategic decision to invest in development of a new area to the managing and further development of world-leading strategic research areas.

The new university-wide strategy forms the basis for how the University’s strategic research funding is to be used in future. The term strategic research areas is used broadly in order to enable continuing development and entry into new areas.
The work on producing the strategy involved the strategic research areas’ coordinators, who have now formed an SRA forum for the areas’ continued development work in cooperation with the faculty and University management teams.

Over the years, Lund University has been extremely successful in creating conditions for strong research environments and interdisciplinary collaborations due to excellent research and subject breadth. The University has managed and developed more than 30 strong research environments, such as Forte Centres of Excellence, VinnExcellence Centres, Linnaeus Knowledge Environments and SRAs, financed by research funding obtained in competition. In the allocation of SRAs for 2010, Lund University was assigned nine of the 43 national SRAs, with participation in a further three. This has given Lund University the opportunity to develop long-term, highly focused research of the highest international standard brought together in knowledge environments with high societal relevance.
