Strategies are in development for international issues, innovation and quality enhancement

The University’s strategic platform has been updated for 2025 and is now applicable until 2027. Looking ahead, the platform will now be reviewed annually to ensure that it is optimally calibrated.
"It is very pleasing to see that the University has started to climb the rankings in recent years. Lots of measures across many fronts have played a role, including the initiatives on international impact."

Ranking and international impact are also part of the quality enhancement effort

It is very pleasing to see that the University has started to climb the rankings in recent years. Lots of measures across many fronts have played a role, including the initiatives on international impact. The latter includes much more than just the well-known indicators around research such as citations, publication in high-profile journals and so on.

More and more people in our organisation have started to see that international impact also concerns the quality of education, students’ opportunities and capacity to secure desired employment (or start their own company), universities’ innovation efforts, the number of registered patents and the like. Within the organisation, there are a lot of skills and wisdom about how to fine tune work on indicators that fall under the heading of “academic reputation” in a nuanced way.

There is now a website that provides a good overview of our standings in the various ranking lists, according to subject and particular perspectives.

International matters

The autumn semester has begun as the spring semester ended ‒ with lots of visits from international universities. These visits are important for our development and often concern everything from specialised student agreements to new, more research and collaboration-orientated cooperation. It is pleasing to note how international universities are fascinated and impressed by how we work with innovation and how we are innovative in a broad sense at Lund University.

Of course, MAX IV is a major draw in itself, with all the surrounding technical, medical and scientific innovative activities. The same can be said of our innovations in the humanities and theology, artistic and cultural activities, social sciences, law and economics. Put simply: Lund University is impressive!

Lund Innovation District is increasingly attracting international interest, and it is still early days.

Shared quality policy in developments

The strategic platform also aids work on the common policy on quality enhancement and quality assurance for both education and research that is soon to be decided upon by the University Board. Once the decision on the policy has been taken, it is time for guidelines on research and education. The aim is a more potent quality system that is powerful and useable in our organisations.

Looking ahead, I will work with an even sharper focus on how strategic work, global measures and innovation districts can increase the University’s international impact. My new title is Pro Vice-Chancellor for Strategy and Global Affairs. I am pleased to hand over external engagement to Viktor Öwall who will continue the work on those issues.
