The search for a new deputy vice-chancellor began in the spring, when the former deputy Eva Wiberg announced that she would be leaving LU on 1 July for the position of vice-chancellor at the University of Gothenburg.

In June, the nominating committee prepared a proposal for a new deputy vice-chancellor, but the Electoral College was not satisfied with receiving a proposal of only one candidate. The process was therefore extended until after the summer, and Stacey Ristinmaa Sörensen was appointed to the position temporarily during the autumn. 21 people were nominated or applied for the position, and five candidates were interviewed.

However, even after the summer, the University Board, through the nominating committee, chose to present only one candidate, who they found to be far superior to the other candidates.

In September, the Electoral College put the matter to a vote: 19 members in favour of Sylvia Schwaag Serger and 14 members against; 8 members abstained, and 2 votes were declared invalid. On 20 September the University Board decided to recommend Schwaag-Serger for the position of deputy vice-chancellor of Lund University.
