Time for the University’s annual academic ceremony on 23 January

The University’s annual academic ceremony is marked by a solemn ceremony focusing on undergraduate education. The celebration is held in connection with Charles Day, the day on which Lund University was inaugurated in 1668. The annual celebration is an opportunity to honour the university and important people associated with it with music and speeches.

During the ceremony, several people who have made an impact on the university's activities in various ways are honoured with music performed by the Academic Chapel and the Lund Academic Choir at Odeum.

Installation of Honorary Fellow of the University

One of the highlights is H.M. Queen Margrethe being conferred the title of Honorary Fellow of Lund University, a title awarded to individuals whose outstanding contributions have been of great significance to the University and society. The Queen is being honoured for her many years of commitment to science, culture and education, as well as for the historical ties she personifies between Denmark and Sweden.

University’s Silver Medal

The Silver Medal, one of the University's most prestigious awards, will be awarded this year to Professor Cecilia Jarlskog, an international leader in particle physics, and Professor Markku Rummukainen, a climate researcher with global influence. They will receive the medal in recognition of their particularly significant achievements in research and their long-standing and important contributions to the University's development.

The Administrative Award

The Administrative Award is presented to Digitalisation Coordinator Håkan Håkansson and Library Assistant Tomasz Lesniak, who are being honoured for their work with the Ravensbrück Archive – work that combines precision, commitment and a strong sense of humanistic responsibility.

Lund Students’ Prize for Excellence in Teaching for 2026

The students recognise teaching practitioners who have made a particularly significant difference in their teaching. This year's award for excellence in teaching  goes to Hannah Herde, assistant senior lecturer at the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Science, Karin Nykvist, senior lecturer at the Centre for Language and Literature at the Faculties of Humanities and Theology, and Olof Sandgren, senior lecturer at the Department of Clinical Sciences in Lund at the Faculty of Medicine. They are all praised for their teaching skills and ability to inspire their students.

Karin Dahlgren Memorial Fund

In addition, the scholarship from the Karin Dahlgren Memorial Fund will be awarded to philosophy student Lotta Flink, who will receive the scholarship for her commitment to nurturing and developing academic traditions.

The ceremony is primarily for invited guests, but a limited number of places are available to the general public, subject to availability. Registration of interest is required and should be sent to overmarskalk [at] rektor [dot] lu [dot] se.
