Opening of Freedom of Thought – from Copernicus to the Celestial Carnival
Are you curious about science and do you appreciate a good carnival tradition? Then you are warmly invited to the opening of the University Library’s new exhibition! Here you’ll experience science and humour in an unexpected combination.
The University Library has recently rediscovered its copy of Nicolaus Copernicus’s classic work “On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres” from 1566. The library is celebrating this with an exhibition which, in keeping with the 2026 Lund Carnival and its celestial theme, highlights freedom of thought – both in science and humour.
The exhibition has been produced in collaboration with the Academic Society’s archives and the 2026 Carnival Committee. It features groundbreaking astronomical works from the 16th and 17th centuries, alongside historical and contemporary carnival material that pokes fun at those in power.
Come and be inspired by a long tradition where free thought, questioning and laughter take centre stage.
Opening speakers
- Library Director Håkan Carlson
- Chairman of the Academic Society Johan Stenfeldt
- General of the Celestial Carnival Hugo Widell
