“Les humains sont plutôt des prolongements d’un environnement, d’un milieu de vie, ou des membres d’un collectif plus large englobant des non-humains, plutôt que des forces qui s’approprient des territoires” Philippe Descola
Camera Music is a collection of eight pieces for male voice, five musicians, electronics, and stock footage clips (videos sourced from commercial online platforms, selected and edited).
Camera Music explores the desire for power that human beings exert over their natural and social environment. It is conceived as a transdisciplinary work in which music, text, and video revolve around a central axis – the theme of power – and reflect on it, at times ironically, at others in a more painful and harsh manner. The decision to use stock footage clips stems from the fact that these very online platforms offer an iconography that unabashedly embodies power, expressed in many different forms that provided material for the creation of the entire cycle.
Camera Music offers a personal and necessarily incomplete response to the question of the function of the work of art, and of its relationship with society, the environment, and the context that surrounds it.
MDI ensemble was formed in Milan in 2002 and has been artist-in residence at festival di Milano Musica from 2012 to 2017. In 2017 the group has been awarded with “Una vita per la Musica prize” and recently with “Franco Abbiati Prize”. Since the beginning, the ensemble collaborates with composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, Salvatore Sciarrino, Gérard Pesson, Marco Stroppa, Stefano Gervasoni, Sofia Gubaidulina, Unsuk Chin. The ensemble regularly appears at some of the most relevant Italian festivals, such as MiTo Settembre Musica, Venice Biennale, Società del Quartetto di Milano, Ravenna Festival, Festival dei Due Mondi, Festival Transart
