Workshop: Turn your ideas into articles with The Conversation

In this interactive workshop, The Conversation's science editor, Miriam Frankel, will guide you through The Conversation's background, goals, and editorial process. We will also discuss the importance of communicating your research to the public, including tips on style, tone, and structure with concrete examples. Additionally, we will explore how to pitch your ideas and different approaches to writing articles.

This is a rare opportunity to work directly with an editor from The Conversation – they visit Lund University only twice a year.

Bring your ideas! Several previous participants have gone on to publish in The Conversation after attending this session (no guarantees, but a strong first step).

We are offering two separate workshops on the same day:

• Morning session: 10:00–12:00 Register morning session
• Afternoon session: 14:30-16:30 Register afternoon session

Please note that these are the same workshops with the same content.

You should only attend one session, not both.

Practical information

You will get the most out of your participation if you:

• Read some articles on The Conversation to get a sense of what they publish.
• Think about the type of articles you might be able to write.

Register by November 9th.

If you receive a confirmed spot but cannot attend, please cancel so that someone from the waiting list can take your place.

Please indicate your preferred time slot when registering.

Selection will be made to ensure a fair distribution across faculties and research areas. You will receive a confirmation if you are allocated a spot.

Why write for The Conversation?

Writing for The Conversation is a unique opportunity to delve into popular science writing, distinct from conventional academic writing. Here, you will:

• Engage with a diverse and extensive audience.
• Collaborate closely with valued editors.
• Potentially achieve significant impact; previous participants have reported outcomes such as participation in international research projects and the publication of scientific articles.
• Cultivate valuable media contacts.

What Lund University researchers say:

• “Visibility with a non-specialised international audience.”
• “I was interviewed by a CNN journalist …"
• "I participated in the workshop that the LU communication department did with the Conversation and it was very helpful. Without it, I would not have submitted to the Conversation."

About The Conversation

Online courses

If attending the workshop is not possible, it is recommended to explore the online courses offered by The Conversation. These short courses provide guidance on pitching and writing, as well as strategies for reaching non-academic audiences. Participants gain access to videos and texts that can be followed at their own pace. These training packages in journalistic writing are designed specifically for researchers at affiliated member universities.
