Andreas Mattsson, Lecturer and Freelance Journalist
"Commissioned Education gives us opportunities to develop"
Andreas Mattsson is a lecturer on the Journalism programme at the Department of Communication and Media at Lund University and an award-winning independent freelance journalist. He has been involved as a mentor and lecturer in most commissioned education programmes, and is currently planning commissioned education in journalism.
When Andreas Mattsson assumed his post as lecturer, his job was to teach and develop the journalism study programme. In order to improve training, he called for partners from the University. Lund University Commissioned Education was one of them.
– Commissioned education gives us opportunities to develop our subject and gives us the ability to reach not only journalism students. A lot of our content can be beneficial to those working in other parts of the world, but also, to some extent, to people who work with communication. Academia is valuable, especially in a changing world.
Andreas Mattson says that his commitment to commissioned education has also benefited his career as a lecturer and freelance journalist. As a teacher, he considers collaborations to develop journalist training as an advantage, and as a freelance journalist, the contact networks he has gained through the programmes have given him many ideas for news stories.
– Through my collaboration with LUCE, new doors have opened up and creative processes have begun. The contacts have also meant that I have been able to access more forums, such as Unionen’s leadership seminars and the LUCE programme Summer Academy for Young Professionals. My participation in the programme Social Innovation in a Digital Context has also given me many perspectives on some of the major challenges in the world right now.
Andreas Mattsson considers LUCE to be a resource in the development of courses as they offer support in project management, marketing and communication efforts.
– I really appreciate the flexibility and that the staff members are agile. Developing this subject that is currently undergoing transition requires flexibility.
The planning of commissioned education in journalism is currently underway and Andreas considers a cooperation with LUCE to be beneficial as a tool for the continuing professional development of journalists.
– I hope to develop these courses internationally as well as nationally. Also, that we over time will offer more courses as they provide opportunities for us to broaden our expertise, our subject and to build on the network of teachers we have. I'm looking forward to this.
