Admission to Master’s programmes
Here you will find information about the procedures that apply to admission to Master’s programmes – primarily useful to those of you who work as a programme coordinator or programme director for a Master’s programme.
Admission to second-cycle programmes in English takes place through a separate round of admissions, with an application deadline of 15 January for the autumn semester and 15 August for the spring semester. Master’s programmes taught in Swedish may be part of the general round of admissions, with an application deadline of 15 April/15 October.
Calls for applications to programmes can only be issued once per semester. Under special circumstances, a supplemental round of admission may take place, subject to approval by the Education Board. Such requests must be received by joakim [dot] hall [at] stu [dot] lu [dot] se by the first day for application for the international round of admissions.
Administration and assessment – who does what?
- The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) assesses the applicant’s general eligibility and English.
- The department that coordinates the programme assesses the specific entry requirements, and evaluates the applicant’s qualifications, through the NyA web.
- The admissions office will send out instructions and a current timetable ahead of each round of admissions. Should a department change their contact person/programme administrator, it is important that you notify the admissions office.
Reply to the admission decision
In the international admissions round, all the admitted students are to accept the offered place via a reply form on Lund University’s Student Portal. The students are informed about this on our web pages and in the message with their admission decision. This is therefore a local reply requirement and is not carried out via Antagning.se or universityadmissions.se. Those who do not accept by the deadline have their admission withdrawn about one week after the reply deadline expired.
In the Swedish admissions round, those admitted and on the waiting list are, as usual, to accept via their admission account, according to the date stated on antagning.se and in the admission decision in question.
Students with conditional offers at the start of the semester
Before the start of the semester, Master’s students with conditional offers must be processed to enable their registration in Ladok. The admissions office reviews and removes conditions on general entry requirements. The department removes conditions for specific entry requirements on the NyA web.
Documentation on completed degree
All students have been informed about sending in complete documentation on their completed degree, to their account on universityadmissions.se, as soon as they have received it. The students who studied at a Swedish higher education institution do not need to upload documents, as their qualifications are visible in NyA.
Send list to the admissions office
One to two weeks before the start of the semester, the admissions office needs lists from the department of the students considered able to start their studies; the list is only to include admitted students who:
- still need to meet the conditions regarding the general entry requirements and
- communicate that they have finished and completed their degree, unless you assess them as able to meet their degree requirements at the latest three weeks after the start of the semester.
- You do not need to include students who already have a degree of 180 credits registered in NyA.
It is a good idea to produce an updated list as the information in NyA can change from day to day.
The students who are able to prove that they have applied for their degree but are waiting for the formal documents will be granted an exemption from the requirements for the study programme and can be registered immediately on the programme.
Those who have not yet received the complete documentation concerning their degree can be allowed to start their studies anyway, if you assess them as able to meet their degree requirements at the latest three weeks after the start of the semester, in compliance with the admission rules. They are granted an exemption to start the first course on the programme.
Masters’ students with conditional offers who are to apply for courses for semester two
Those students who have conditional offers for Master’s programmes and who have not been registered for the programme the week before the application period for semester two opens, will not be included in the programme documentation for the semester and in that case cannot apply for courses within the programme either.
As soon as a student has communicated that complete documentation of the first-cycle qualification is on NyA, you need to ask us at the admissions office to check eligibility. In cases where programme registration is carried out after the registration period for semester two has opened, you must inform us so we can enter the programme documentation manually.
Study as a freestanding course
A student who has not yet been registered for the programme by the registration deadline for semester two, may instead apply for the course as a freestanding course. If the student is registered for the programme before the first selection stage, you can ask us to change the application to within the programme. If you have only published programme courses, those students who have not yet been registered for the programme are allowed to wait until any late registration opens.
