Step 2: Calls, selections and nominations
Step 2 includes ongoing calls/application periods, selection and ranking, nomination, information about nominated students and nomination of students on a waiting list.
During ongoing application periods
During ongoing application periods you should be available to answer students’ questions.
Frequent questions from students might be:
- During which semester is it appropriate for me to go? (This depends on the programme)
- What can I study while abroad? (This also depends on the programme)
- What will I get credits for towards my degree? (Depends on the programme. Refer students to e.g. study advisor at the student’s home department)
- Will I be able to transfer credits from language studies to my degree? (Different rules for different faculties. Find out what rules apply at your faculty)
- How many credits must I obtain while abroad? (Information available in LINK. Ask the international representative (interhand) at your faculty if you are unsure. Every faculty has an international representative who convenes with faculty representatives within internationalisation, the University’s specialised centres, and External Relations to discuss internationalisation and mobility.)
- Shall I study at an undergraduate or Master’s level? (All universities allow undergraduate studies, but not all allow Master’s studies. See information in LINK. It is generally accepted to transfer credit from courses at the undergraduate level even though the student is studying at the Master’s level at LU, as long as the courses complement the study programme and do not overlap what has been studied before. This is the general view, but may differ between programmes and faculties. Find out what rules apply at your faculty.)

Find information about restrictions, language requirements and additional fees in the information sheets in LINK
The amount of restrictions in the range of courses and programmes offered might differ at partner universities. It is advantageous if you as a coordinator have some idea about where there are many restrictions and in what subject fields. It is she students’ responsibility to put together a study plan of only permitted courses. You will find links to the range of courses offered in the information sheets in LINK.
The host university might have language requirements obliging you to take a language test in connection with your application. Information about language requirements can be found in the information sheets in LINK. Students will have to pay for the tests themselves, approximately SEK 1 200 for a TOEFL test and SEK 2 000 for an IELTS test.
Additional costs may be expetcted for visa, travel cost for pick-up visa at emabssy, vaccination and health certificate.
Exchange students will not have to pay a tuition fee at the host university, but there may be additional costs at some host universities, such as insurance, public transportation and administrative fees. All such fees can be found in the information sheets in LINK.
It is good to remind the students that it must be possible to transfer credits for the courses when they return home. The student is responsible for finding out whether or not it is possible.
Selection and ranking
The selection and ranking processes differ between faculties. Find out what the process is like at your faculty.
Nomination and information to nominated students
The best and most suitable students are nominated. It is appropriate to consider the following when nominating:
- It should be possible to transfer credits for the courses.
- The study plan cannot include courses that are restricted at the partner university.
- For universities with advanced language requirements, it is appropriate to evaluate the students’ English skills, but no recommendation on how to properly do this currently exists.
- Some universities require that the students’ grades are over a certain average.
Selection and nomination processes may differ between faculties. Some faculties manage it centrally while others consult with the study advisor/international officer concerned before the International Office makes the final nomination decision.
Nomination decisions for University-wide places
Decisions on nominations of students to University-wide exchange study places shall be submitted to the relevant international officer at External Relations no later than 25 January and 1 April respectively. The students shall at that time have accepted their study places and entered their contact information in LINK. Students who have been nominated for University-wide study places will be processed by an international officer at External Relations who will contact students no later than a month after the previously mentioned deadlines. In connection with the nomination decision, it is helpful if the student is informed of when External Relations will contact them, so that they don’t have to wonder when they will hear from an administrator.
Applicants on waiting lists
If students decline their nominations, then other students may be nominated provided that the deadline has not passed. The deadline for nominating applicants on a waiting list for University-wide study places is 25 January and 1 April.
Available study places for University-wide agreements
If University-wide study places remain available, contact the relevant international officer at External Relations as soon as possible.
