Johan Bergström, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering (LTH)

“THE KNOWLEDGE I GAIN IS JUST AS EXTENSIVE AS THE KNOWLEDGE I CONVEY”

The Division of Risk Management and Societal Safety at LTH has organised commissioned education in cooperation with LUCE for several years. The international programmes in Systematic Safety Management usually have participants from a number of high-risk sectors, such as the transport sector, construction industry and healthcare. As the participants are diverse and experienced in their sectors, the discussions are very rewarding.

Johan Bergström

Johan Bergström is senior lecturer at LTH and programme director for the cross-sectoral Master’s (60 credits) programme ‘Human factors and systems safety’, which is aimed at professionals in various high-risk industries.

– We engage the participants in a discussion about theories and practices that is to stimulate critical thinking and an academic approach to systematic safety management, says Johan Bergström.

As the participants are professionals and experienced in the area, but in different sectors, they have much to contribute to the discussions. The knowledge exchange between lecturers and participants is high, as they learn from each other about a theory’s applicability or non-applicability, which is a considerable benefit according to Johan Bergström.

– I can send a theory in one direction and get back a lot of arguments on why it can or cannot be applied in reality. We also get a unique insight into daily work in high-risk environments, which we would otherwise lack.

One of the aims of the programme is to create a community for increasing critical thinking in systematic safety management.

– I have created a network of contacts that connects friends worldwide, and participants with each other. The most gratifying part of my work is when we all meet during course weeks, it makes the job even more enjoyable!

When Johan Bergström became programme director, he also became more involved with Lund University Commissioned Education (LUCE) on the administrative side.

– I hope that work will continue with LUCE, as I believe in lifelong learning through continuing professional development and they make the processes smooth. I like that commissioned education contributes to society by offering professional development to organisations’ employees in the middle of their careers.
