First Strategy for Education is to act as a compass

For the first time in the University’s history, there is a common Strategy for Education. Our changing world means that we all need to think and act in order to meet the University’s challenges. No one knows exactly how the world around us will develop and we therefore need to help out. The Strategy for Education is to guide all those working in education.

The Strategy for Education has been drawn up by the Education Board, which is led by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Lena Eskilsson, and consists of members from all the faculties, student representatives and representatives of the employee organisations and the University administration. It is an elaboration on the prioritised area Education in Transition, which is included in the Platform for Strategic Work.

“We need to meet the needs that emerge from changes in society and therefore we require a common strategy,” says Lena Eskilsson. “It is to act as a compass for all those working in education, create cohesion and guide us towards common goals. We need to be more agile while also utilising our academic core values and extensive subject knowledge.”

A basis for existential sustainability

Ann Kristin Wallengren, pro vice-chancellor for education and culture, has been a driving force in the work. She points out that knowledge, education and training provide a foundation for existential sustainability:

“This provides preparedness for societal changes and transformations,” she explains. “An important part of the strategy is that we are also to make the most of the unique potential that exists in the breadth of the University’s range of subjects.”

The Strategy for Education was approved by the University Board in April 2023 and applies for the rest of 2023 and 2024, after which it can be renewed. This covers the same period as the Platform for Strategic Work. There is a lot happening in the world around us that the University may need to relate to in new ways. One of the key ideas of the Platform for Strategic Work is therefore to prepare for shorter planning horizons. Like the Platform for Strategic Work, the Strategy for Education also contains three guiding principles – innovative, digital and sustainable.

Follow-up by the Education Board

The university-wide Education Board’s Plan of Operations for 2024 is to be based on the Strategy for Education. The Education Board is also responsible for following up the Strategy’s implementation. The Strategy is also to be used by faculties, departments and the central administration in work on prioritisation of education and support activities.

The faculty managements and the managements of other organisational units within the University independently determine how they use the Platform for Strategic Work and Strategy for Education within their areas of responsibility. Each faculty is to take into consideration the conditions that prevail at their faculty and draw inspiration from the sections that are relevant. The Strategy for Education will also form the basis for the University Management’s strategic choices, in the same way as the Research Strategy.
