On 29 May, it’s time for the biggest ceremony of the year: the doctoral degree conferment ceremony at Lund Cathedral. This year marks a new record, with 290 doctors, 48 jubilee doctors and 16 honorary doctors set to be honoured.

In a solemn ceremony, the doctoral students who completed their doctoral studies in the past year and successfully defended their doctoral theses at Lund University will have their degrees conferred. The ceremony also sees degrees conferred on the faculties’ honorary doctors. Doctors who completed their doctoral degrees 50 years ago become jubilee doctors.

The procession sets off from AF Borgen to the Cathedral at 12:00.

The order of the faculties in the procession is as follows:

  • Faculty of Theology
  • Faculty of Law
  • Faculty of Medicine
  • Faculty of Engineering
  • Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts
  • Faculty of Humanities
  • Faculty of Social Sciences
  • School of Economics and Management
  • Faculty of Science

The ceremony begins with a welcoming address from the Vice-Chancellor, followed by the degree conferments of the nine faculties, during which new doctors and honorary doctors receive their degrees, and those who completed their doctoral degrees 50 years ago become jubilee doctors. The entire ceremony is held in Latin.

The new doctors and honorary doctors receive the insignia: doctor’s hat or laurel wreath, doctor’s ring and diploma. Jubilee doctors receive a new diploma.

Before the conferment ceremony of the faculties historically included in the Faculty of Philosophy, laurel wreaths are carried in by the wreath bearers who arrive at the Cathedral by horse and carriage.

The ceremony includes cannon salutes from Wendes Salutbatteri as a tribute to the doctors.

After the doctoral degree conferment ceremony, one of the new doctoral graduates holds a speech – an oration to the University.

Bishop Johan Tyrberg concludes the ceremony with a prayer in Latin.

The ceremony will feature music performed by the Lund University Academic Orchestra and the Lund University Academic Choir.
