Before arriving in Sweden

If you as an employee expect to spend 366 days or more in Sweden, you must apply to the Swedish Tax Agency to be registered in the Swedish Population Register. To be registered, you must have a permanent address in Sweden. Upon registration, you will receive a Swedish personal identity number.

Insurance for employees and guests without a Swedish personal identity number

Before you, as an employee, are registered and receive a Swedish personal identity number, you as a citizen of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland must carry an EU card, European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), in order to receive subsidised healthcare (i.e. only pay the patient fee).

For persons who do not have a valid EU card, or who are not from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, the Kammarkollegiet's insurance for foreign visitors (formerly GIF) applies for emergency care for the person and their family. However, the insurance does not cover planned care, vaccinations or maternity care.

The insurance for foreign visitors automatically applies to persons without a Swedish personal identity number who participate in our university's activities. The insurance for foreign visitors applies around the clock to international staff and foreign guests and their accompanying families.

The insurance applies during travel directly between the home country and Sweden and entitles the insured to free emergency medical care in Sweden, among other things. When visiting a doctor or dentist, the employee or guest must either pay the cost or request an invoice made out to the person in question. The person then attaches the receipt/invoice to their claim form (which must be signed by your head of department/manager), which the employee then sends to the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency.

Within the Schengen area

Insurance for foreign visitors also applies to travel within the Schengen area for persons who have a valid Schengen visa (90 days).

Employees who have been registered in the Swedish population register and have been assigned a Swedish personal identity number.

When an employee has been registered in the Swedish population register and has been assigned a Swedish personal identity number, insurance for foreign visitors ceases to apply. The employee is then covered by occupational injury insurance for employees and also receives fully subsidised healthcare (i.e. only pays patient fees). Please note that insurance for foreign visitors also ceases to apply to the employee's family members.

Private insurance cover

Bear in mind that the employee should also take out private insurance cover, such as home insurance and travel insurance for private trips.

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Citizens of countries outside Europe or European citizens who are registered in Sweden and do not have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can order the card from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) for travel to other EU/EEA countries or Switzerland.

Apply for a European Health Insurance Card on the Swedish Social Insurance Agency's website (Försäkringskassan)

Insurance for guests with a Swedish personal identity number – personal injury protection

The Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency's insurance Special personal injury protection (SPS) automatically applies to guests who participate in the university's activities and who have a Swedish personal identity number. The insurance corresponds to the occupational injury insurance for employees and applies to, from and during working hours.
