Make an inventory of your web content

By making an inventory you can create an overview of the web content on each website. Below you can read about common types of content, download an Excel file to help you map the content of your website and read about what you should remember when it comes to destroying content.

Different types of web content

A website often contains several different types of content, for example:

  • Webpages (for example landing page or page)
  • Web forms
  • Images and illustrations
  • Documents
  • Video
  • Info boxes, image boxes or text boxes
  • News
  • Calendar events
  • Soundtracks

Mapping the web content enables you to create an overview of the website and a basis for systematically making the content accessible.

Regarding destruction

Websites are to be used as a channel for communication and not as a storage space. It can therefore be a good idea when you make an inventory of your website’s content to see whether anything can be destroyed.

Content that can be destroyed immediately

Content that is temporary or has little importance for the website can normally be destroyed immediately once the information has ceased to be relevant. An example of content that can be destroyed immediately is a calendar event for something that has already taken place.

Content that is worth retaining and should be saved

Some web content may be worth retaining for the future, for example for future research. To guarantee that it is retained, a web crawler can be used to regularly collect and save a static snapshot of the website. For those who use the university-wide web solution Drupal, this takes place automatically twice a year (since April 2020). If you plan to make major changes

If you are planning to make major changes to a website that could be worth retaining, it is a good idea to download an HTML version of the page before you implement the changes. The HTML versions can be saved in LU Box, for example.

If you discover an outdated webpage

If you discover an outdated webpage, you can either merely unpublish the page or save it to an HTML page and then delete it. The HTML versions can be saved in LU Box, for example.
