International research funders
In the EU
The EU's main instrument for funding research in Europe.
is one of the longest-running instruments supporting co-operation among scientists and researchers across Europe. COST invites proposals for new COST Actions contributing to the scientific, economic, cultural or societal development of Europe
The objective is to achieve better understanding and mutual enrichment between the European Union and third countries co-operation in the field of higher education through promoting the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills at higher education level.
is a pan-European network for market-oriented, industrial R&D. Funding from national sources implemented in Eureka clusters, umberellas and individual projects.
European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO)
EMBO promotes bioscience in Europe through targeted programmes and activities. For example:
- EMBO Long-term Fellowships
- EMBO Short-term Fellowships
- Young investigators programme
European Science Foundation (ESF)
The ESF promotes high quality science at a European level. It acts as a catalyst for the development of science by bringing together leading scientists and funding agencies to debate, plan and implement pan-European initiatives.
Human Frontier Science Programme (HFSP)
The HSFP supports basic research focused on complex mechanisms of living organisms. Emphasis is placed on novel collaborations that bring together scientist from different disciplines (e.g. from chemistry, physics, computer science, engineering) to focus on problems in the life sciences. Two types of support are available:
- Program Grants
- Young Investigators' Grants
- Long-term fellowships
- Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships
- Short-term Fellowships
- Career Development Awards
In the USA
Amelia Earhart Fellowship
Amelia Earhart Fellowship program helps talented women, pursuing advanced studies in the typically male-dominated fields of aerospace-related sciences and aerospace-related engineering, achieve their educational goals.
National Institute of Health (NIH)
NIH a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. Composed of 27 Institutes and Centers, the NIH provides leadership and financial support to researchers in every state and throughout the world.
National Science Foundation (NSF)
NSF gives support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering, except for medical sciences. The Foundation also supports cooperative research between universities and industry, US participation in international scientific and engineering efforts, and educational activities at every academic level.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
The Gates Foundation is one of the largest private foundations in the world. Its global goal is to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty.
