Applications within a degree programme and admission to a later stage of a degree programme

Information on the procedures for applying to a course within a degree programme is available here, including guidance on how admission to a later stage of a degree programme can be handled.

Application within a degree programme

A degree programme is made up of a number of compulsory courses, and for some degree programmes also a semester of elective or completely optional courses. Elective courses refer to courses that the department specifies that degree programme students can choose among for a specific semester. Optional courses refer to courses that degree programme students freely choose to fill the semester with.

Admission to courses within degree programmes is handled either directly in Ladok (via the degree programme structure) or through application on antagning.se/universityadmission.se. Some degree programmes handle all admissions to the relevant degree programme semester directly in Ladok. Other degree programmes handle all degree programme semesters except for the first one through application on antagning.se. A few degree programmes manage some degree programme semesters in Ladok and some degree programme semesters via antagning.se.

Ladok

When support tools are needed to check specific entry requirements and/or selection for the courses in the coming degree programme semester, admission should be managed through antagning.se. Ladok cannot check the qualifications of applicants or make selections in cases where there are more applicants than places.

Who can apply for which courses within a degree programme is determined partly by the course instance application model and partly by who is included in the programme base for each programme.

Programme information is to be available for all first-cycle programmes when courses within the degree programme for the next semester must be applied for via antagning.se/universityadmission.se. The purpose of the programme information is to give students ample opportunities to apply for the right courses for the coming semester. It therefore must contain detailed information on the courses that apply for each degree programme semester, and any rules and conditions/restrictions that apply to the degree programme and/or the different programme semesters.

The programme information is produced by the department responsible for the programme in collaboration with the Admissions Office, and is to be available in good time before applications for the next semester open. The Admissions Office prepares a draft of the information based on the past two semesters' information and the offering in the coming admissions round, and then sends it to the relevant department. The departments then submit any amendments.

Instructions for students on how to apply to Bachelor's programmes are published on lu.se (in Swedish)

The Admissions Office must send the degree programme base from Ladok to NyA before each new admissions round. The degree programme base indicates which students are taking which degree programmes. In this way, NyA receives information about which students are allowed to apply for courses within specific degree programmes via antagning.se. If students are not included in the degree programme base, they cannot apply for courses within the degree programme for that semester.

The students expected to be active on the degree programme during the next semester are specified. This information is based on the semester in which the students commenced their studies. Students are assigned to a class.

The next step is to specify the maximum number of credits for which students can be admitted to the programme (normally 30). Some degree programme students are not included in the degree programme base. Most often, this is because they have not kept up with the rate of their studies or have been on exchange studies, and are now expected by the system to have completed their degree programme studies. However, the department can ask the Admissions Office to manually add students to the degree programme base directly in NyA.

In order for NyA to know how a course may be applied for, each course instance has an application model linked to it. An application model specifies within which degree programmes (and possibly specialisations) a course can be applied for, and whether the course can be applied for as a freestanding course. Some course instances can only be applied for as a freestanding course.

However, an application model cannot specify which class within a degree programme can apply for the course instance linked to the model, which means that everyone found in the degree programme base will be able to apply for the course instance within the degree programme.

Admission to a later stage of a degree programme

The Admission Rules stipulate that a student can be admitted to a later stage of a degree programme if they have completed studies corresponding to the early stage of the programme. Lund University’s delegation rules state that the faculties are to process admission to a later stage of a degree programme.

Admission to a later stage of a degree programme can be granted from the second semester. Admission is conditional on the availability of places on the degree programme. If a degree programme offers the possibility to admit students to a later stage of a degree programme, there should be a clear scheme and application instructions for this on the programme's website. The faculty/department is to have a selection procedure in place in case there are more qualified applicants than places.

As admission to a later stage of a degree programme is handled differently within the University, it is not possible to compile central information; rather, each faculty or department is responsible for informing prospective students. Remember also to inform students about the procedures for applying for credit transfer for previous studies.

Below are three ways for students to be admitted to a later stage of a degree programme.

This option is suitable for degree programmes that do not have a programme structure in Ladok and when an application for courses within the programme must be completed before each semester after the first semester. To ensure that applicants who have already taken an introductory course or courses and who apply to a degree programme are not admitted to "an empty programme", they need to be given the opportunity, upon admission to the programme, to also be admitted to the course(s) that come at a later stage in the programme syllabus. The student must apply for the degree programme and the course they are going to take. Thereafter, the student needs to be given the possibility to be admitted to both the degree programme and the course (30 credits), totalling 60 credits. Parallel studies is something the Admissions Office can process at the request of the department once the application deadline has passed.

Ladok

If this procedure for admission to a later stage of a degree programme is to be applied, information on this possibility must be made available on the department's website for reasons of equal treatment. Students also need to be informed on the website that they need to contact the study counsellor well in advance of the application deadline so that the application can be correctly submitted by the deadline, based on the possibility of being admitted to more than 60 credits.

In the application, the degree programme is to have priority 1 and the courses to be taken instead of the first semester's courses are to be ranked immediately after the programme. The courses must be offered at Lund University. (It is also possible to rank the course as number 1 and the programme as number 2). Furthermore, in order to be considered for admission with parallel studies, the student must meet or will meet the entry requirements prior to selection for admission to the programme. For courses at level 2, the department must also have made the assessment that the applicant will meet the entry requirements by the start of the course.

Immediately after the application deadline, the department is to send a consolidated list to instlant [at] stu [dot] lu [dot] se (instlant[at]stu[dot]lu[dot]se) of the students who have contacted the study counsellor with a request to be admitted to a later stage of the degree programme and who have applied as above. For efficient processing, always send the cases together. It is a good idea to use the template below.

It is also possible on antagning.se to announce an opportunity for admission to a later stage of a particular degree programme, for example for year two. Either the programme is announced with a specialisation that indicates it is for a later stage of the degree programme or as a separate opportunity for admission to a later stage of the degree programme. Contact the Admissions Office for advice before publishing an announcement of this kind.

The faculty/department can also admit students who apply outside NyA to a later stage of a degree programme through application to the study counsellor. In this case, there must be clear application instructions regarding this published on the degree programme's website, so that all prospective students are aware of the possibility. The application instructions must specify what the selection procedure is in case there are more qualified applicants than places.

A decision on admission to a later stage of the degree programme must be registered and the registered decision sent to the Admissions Office for admission directly in Ladok. The decision only entitles the individual to admission for a particular semester of a degree programme, not to the course to be taken. For this reason, this procedure is best suited for degree programmes that use the structure in Ladok. Otherwise, applicants also need to apply and compete for the course they wish to study.
