Current calls
National University of Singapore and Lund University Research Collaboration Fund
The funding is aimed at established researchers at Lund University, as well as colleagues employed at the National University of Singapore, in Advanced Materials, Biotechnology, AI in Medicine, and Computational Social Sciences and Humanities.
For the 2025 funding round, LU and NUS are committed to award several successful LU and NUS teams, to develop and reinforce lasting contacts with the very best researchers in their field.
NUS and LU are open to innovative ideas that support both LU and NUS academics to initiate and pursue collaborations that ideally lead to new science and to future applications for external funding.
Funding and project duration
Budget requests should be no more than SEK 150,000 from LU and S$ 20,000 from NUS per project for a project duration of 1.5 years.
Each institution’s contributions will be used exclusively to fund its own researchers, and their research expenses will not be co-mingled. The award of any funds from either institution will be subject, in each case, to the internal processes and procedures of such institution. All travel activities must comply with the guidelines of the respective universities.
Eligible grant activities
Funds can only be spent on activities that fit the purpose of this call.
- Proposals may include workshops (face-to-face and virtual), symposia, staff exchanges, research seminars/presentations and formation or development of a collaborative network.
- Eligible costs include travel and subsistence, consumables and the cost of research assistants, research associate and technicians which are directly related to the project. Existing staff time including the Co-PIs time cannot be costed to the project. Applicants should itemise their budget using the tables in the application form.
- All travel activities must comply with the guidelines of the respective universities.
Lund University Business travel regulations and guidelines on the Staff Pages
Funds within LU are transferred to the department's cost center via an accounting order, which means that reverse overhead is applied to the direct costs.
How to apply
At NUS, the fund is open to full-time academic staff only, with at least 75% time at NUS and a contract period that outlast the project period.
At LU, established researchers with a PhD degree who are permanently employed at Lund University, are eligible to apply.
One proposal per principal applicant per call is permitted. Each joint application should have one principal applicant based at LU and one principal applicant based at NUS and should contain:
- A written case for support (maximum 2 pages) to include:
- A description of the relevant research/training conducted by the team in recent years;
- A description of the activities and collaboration proposed;
- Explanation of how the activities proposed will generate demonstrable added value to the PI / Research Group / Department / Faculty / College
- A description of the opportunities available for leveraging funding, especially from overseas sources;
- A financial summary: Each application should provide information on the requested costs using the budget section of the application template.
- Two-page CVs of the LU and NUS PIs.
Researchers from other institutions may also participate as a co-investigator and at their own expense.
Application deadline and project milestones
Application will open by September 1, 2025, and close by October 15, 2025 (23.59 pm SGT). Results will be communicated in December 2025. Projects may start at the earliest January 1, 2026, and must end at the latest June 30, 2027. Deadline for final report submission is September 30, 2027.
Review and selection of applications
The call is competitive, and each university will rank the proposals based on excellence of research, fit to call, value for money, potential strategic value of the partnership (including potential for opportunity to leverage additional funding) and the impact the award would bring to the applicant, based on their career stage and any existing networks or support. NUS and LU will then jointly decide on the final agreed selections.
Expected outcomes
Researchers are encouraged to achieve at least one of the following outcomes by the end of the project period:
- At least a refereed publication in a national/internationally recognized journal shall be jointly published based on the content of the cooperative project (the PI or project core member shall be the first, second, or corresponding author of the article); or books/book chapters; or jointly organize outreach activities about the joint research; or
- Jointly apply for national/international competitive grant or other sources of external funding; or
- Other outcomes of equal value.
Reporting
Principal applicants who are successful in receiving an award are required to provide a report within 3 months of the end of the award period using a template provided. The narrative element of the report should provide details of the relevant activities supported and how these have addressed the objectives of the call. The financial element of the report serves as a final expenditure statement and should detail the award amount and the award spent. Responsibility remains with the PI to ensure all spend has been charged to the correct award code.
Application portal
This is a joint call, and an application should be jointly submitted by the LU and NUS PIs.
Applications must be completed on the template provided and within the page limit stated. As the form only allows people within the NUS organization to upload files, NUS PI should upload the joint application and two-page CVs in a single pdf file on behalf of the LU-NUS team at the latest by October 15, 2025 (23.59 pm SGT).
