Each year, Monash University organises a research writing and publishing workshop at their Prato campus in Tuscany, Italy. The workshop involves a five-day intensive workshop. The workshop’s aim is to mentor doctoral students in social sciences, humanities and related subjects to enhance their skills in preparing, writing, and getting an article published in a major academic journal or a chapter published in a book released by a recognised quality commercial or university press publisher.

The call for applications for the 2026 Graduate Research Writing and Publishing Workshop, organised by Monash University at their Prato campus in Italy 15-19 June, 2026, is closed.

Format of the workshop

  • 15-19 June 2026, at the Monash University Prato Centre in Prato, Italy
  • The workshop is comprised of a five-day residency at the Monash University Prato Centre. Individual sessions address the various stages of the article/book chapter writing process from selecting a journal for publication, drafting your article, to writing abstracts and responding to referees’ reports and comments. In addition, there are sessions about career planning, successful networking and managing collaborative/interdisciplinary relationships.
  • In addition to classroom work, candidates are also provided with dedicated periods for writing, working individually with academic mentors, exchanging drafts, and providing their peers with constructive feedback.
  • The activities include breakout sessions, giving students the opportunity to small group writing and peer-feedback activities.
  • Doctoral students from the University of Oxford, University of Warwick, Durham University and Penn State will also participate.

Entry requirements

Doctoral students employed at Lund University in the humanities, social sciences and related fields such as law, economics/economic history and sustainability studies, are eligible to apply.

Please consider that the research field should be in alignment with the style of HASS journal/book chapter writing to take part in the workshop. Participating doctoral students should be well into the data collection/analysis/writing phase of their PhD studies.

To be eligible, applicants must at the time of application:

  • have successfully completed at a minimum, one full year of candidature and not yet undertaken their final review

  • submit a draft abstract (max 250 words)
  • have applied for appropriate travel permissions with the host facility
  • outline a developed and achievable writing proposal for a journal article or quality book chapter with a recognised quality commercial or university press publisher, which should be submitted within 3 months after the workshop (a reminder/check in will be sent at 2 and 3 months)
  • have the support of their main/primary supervisor
  • have not participated in this workshop previously.

Once selected, to participate the selected doctoral students are required to:

  • Bring a draft manuscript (approx. 3 000 words) to be further developed over the workshop’s duration
  • Attend all the workshop sessions, including writing periods and feedback sessions
  • Make demonstrable progress on the draft article or chapter by the end of the workshop with a clear agreed to timeline for submission to a reputable journal/publisher
