The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) is tasked with evaluating the quality of higher education and research. The government assigns UKÄ's remit. The national quality assurance system is based on the higher education institutions taking considerable individual responsibility for their own internal quality assurance.
UKÄ will carry out four types of reviews between 2017 and 2022 to ensure quality in Swedish higher education.
Appraisal of applications for degree-awarding powers
At Lund University this primarily concerns study programmes leading to professional qualifications. The University can independently decide on other study programmes.
Institutional reviews of the HEIs' quality assurance processes
Focus on how satisfactorily the University’s quality assurance work (system) functions based on UKÄ’s criteria. A review of Lund University is to commence in autumn 2020. The assessment panel consists of the following members:
- Thomas Wilhelmsson, University of Helsinki (chairman and international expert)
- Gunnar Grepperud, The Arctic University of Norway (international expert)
- Karin Holmgren, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (expert)
- Therese Hindman Persson, Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate (working life representative)
- Anna Ruus, University of Gothenburg (student representative)
As a first part of the review, the University submitted a self-evaluation to UKÄ on 27 November 2020. The self-evaluation is Lund University’s report of how it manages quality assurance and quality enhancement of education.
The local students’ union was also offered the chance to submit a written statement, in which the union gave its view of student influence on the University’s management of quality assurance. You can read the statement by Lund University Students’ Unions on their website.
The review is planned to be completed in the autumn of 2021.
The national quality assurance system entails that universities are responsible to a considerable extent for evaluating their study programmes. However, the Swedish Higher Education Authority still reviews a selection of programmes, particularly third cycle programmes, and those that lead to a professional status qualification. In the current six-year cycle, which runs from 2017 to 2022, a thematic evaluation of Sweden’s nursing programmes remains to be conducted.
In 2017 a thematic evaluation of the work to promote sustainable development at higher education institutions was carried out. The next evaluation will focus on the higher education institutions’ work on promoting widened participation. The process will begin in early 2021.
There you will also find reports with results from completed evaluations, a schedule for coming evaluations, etc.
