Admissions round and offering

The faculties decide which degree programmes will be announced and when. Courses and degree programmes in the first and second cycles, with some exceptions, are to be announced via antagning.se/universityadmissions.se. The offering to be announced is entered into the Lubas education database, according to their timetables.

Lunds University education database Lubas

The offering is checked by the Admissions Office and then becomes searchable on antaging.se/universityadmissions.se. Applications made via antaging.se/universityadmissions.se are presented in the national admissions system NyA.

What is an admissions round?

In an admissions round, applications and admission to a group of course and degree programme instances are processed together in the NyA admissions system with a common timetable for e.g. application deadlines and selection.

Announcements for courses and degree programmes that are to be applied for via antaging.se/universityadmissons.se are placed in different admissions rounds. An admissions round pertains to admission to a specific semester and is also defined by a specific application period, a closing date for supporting documents, a specific selection date and the sending of admission notifications. Over the year we have 13 different admissions rounds, eight for the autumn semester and five for the spring semester.

In addition to the large national admissions rounds for the autumn and spring semesters, there are other admissions rounds where courses and degree programmes with similar conditions or that are aimed at the same category of applicants are grouped together. There are admissions rounds with courses and degree programmes aimed primarily at international applicants or at professionals seeking continuing professional development. These admissions rounds are organised in such a way that admission notifications are sent out in time for applicants to apply for a residence permit for studies (for non-EU/EEA students) or leave of absence (for professionals).

It is important to consider who you are targeting when deciding in which admissions round to announce a particular course or degree programme. See more under each admissions round below.

Admission timetables

The major national Swedish admissions rounds for the autumn and spring semesters are called HT20ÅÅ and VT20ÅÅ. These admissions rounds announce degree programmes for new entrants and degree programmes in the second cycle that are taught in Swedish, courses and course packages, and the possibility to apply for courses within degree programmes for existing degree programme students. For the autumn semester, the application deadline is 15 April* and for the spring semester, the application deadline is 15 October*.

Courses and degree programmes that are announced in these two admissions rounds can only be applied for via the Swedish page on antagning.se. English-speaking degree programme students who log in with their LU account via universityadmissions.se are also given access to these admissions rounds' offerings if the student is included in the degree programme base for the programme they are studying.

Degree programme base

However, courses and degree programmes taught in English and announced in the national admissions round can be found on the English LU website. The applicant is informed that the course or degree programme can only be applied for in the national admissions round ("Swedish student application round") and is informed about what it entails to apply in the Swedish national round.

We have two different international admissions rounds in which only courses and degree programmes that are taught in English are announced – one for Master's programmes and one for Bachelor's programmes and courses. The application period and admission notifications have been brought forward to allow international applicants who need a residence permit to receive a decision in time for the start of their studies. Application is open 15 October-15 January*.

Admissions round for international Master’s programmes: Master’s autumn semester 20YY/Master’s spring semester 20YY (MASTERHTÅÅ/MASTERVTÅÅ)

The University has decided that Master's programmes (60 credits and 120 credits) will only be offered in one admissions round per semester, and that the Master's programmes taught in English will be offered in the international admissions round for Master's programmes. Only in the event of special circumstances can an announcement be published in a supplementary admissions round. In this case, the faculty must request a supplementary announcement from the Admissions Office no later than the first day of applications for the international Master's programme. The Education Board will make decisions on these matters.

The course and degree programme instances that are announced in an international admissions round can be found both on universityadmissions.se and on antagning.se. It is possible to find courses and degree programmes on both the University’s websites, lu.se and lunduniversity.lu.se.

Admissions round for international courses and Bachelor’s programmes: International courses and Bachelor’s programmes autumn semester 20YY/International courses and Bachelor’s programmes spring semester 20YY IKHTÅÅ/IKVTÅÅ

In these admissions rounds, courses and degree programmes taught in English, Bachelor's programmes and freestanding courses are announced.

Bachelor's programmes taught in English in this admissions round may request and be granted permission by UHR to use only upper secondary school grades as a selection criterion (an exception from using results from the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test as a selection criterion). If such permission is granted, the Bachelor's programme must also be announced in the subsequent national admissions round, with Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test results as one of the selection criteria. The faculties must submit a request to the Admissions Office by the beginning of May the year before the programme is due to start.

The course and degree programme instances that are announced in an international admissions round can be found both on universityadmissions.se and on antagning.se. It is possible to find course and degree programme instances on both the University’s websites, lu.se and lunduniversity.lu.se.

Music autumn semester 20YY (MUSIKHTÅÅ)

Admissions rounds for artistic degree programmes in music. Applications are open 1 December-15 January*.

Performing arts autumn semester 20YY (SCENHTÅÅ)

Admissions rounds for artistic degree programmes in the performing arts. Applications are open 1 December-15 January*.

Fine arts autumn semester 20YY (KONST1HTÅÅ)

Admissions rounds for degree programmes in the fine arts. Applications are open 15 January- 1 March*.

Professional development autumn semester 20YY/spring semester 20YY (VIFYHTÅÅ/VTÅÅ)

In this admissions round, courses and degree programmes are announced which are mainly aimed at professionals and which require previous professional experience. Admission notifications are sent out earlier in order to allow those accepted to have time to be granted leave of absence. In this round, UHR registers professional experience based on the submitted documents.

Applications are open 15 February-15 March* for the autumn semester and 15 August-15 September* for the spring semester. Admission notifications are sent out in mid or late April for the autumn semester, and in mid or late October for the spring semester.

Compared to the application periods that apply to the national admissions rounds, the early application periods are not well known to the general public (except for the target group of specialist nurses who have been using this round for several years), so the necessity of announcing in this round instead of in the national admissions round should be considered.

Offering and number of places available for admission

Course and degree programme instances refer to specific occasions when the course or degree programme is offered. Course and degree programme instances set out details of how the course or degree programme will be offered, for example the language of instruction, course design, rate of study and period. An instance is part of a specific admissions round.

What is an admissions round?

Before selection in an admissions round, the number of places available for admission must be provided for each course or degree programme instance that is announced. The number of places available for admission indicates the maximum number of students to be admitted after selection in that admissions round.

The number of places available for admission is posted on the NyA website by the date indicated in the admissions round timetable. The number of places available for admission is to be provided for both the first selection and the second selection. If only one selection is carried out, admission numbers are set for the first selection only.

The NyA admissions system and the NyA website

If you need to ensure that applicants from certain degree programmes always get a certain number of places on a course, you can set a detailed number of places available for admission. This means that the department submits how many of the places are to go to freestanding course applicants or to applicants within one or more programmes. Unless a detailed number of places available for admission is specified, the standard distribution is that half of the places go to freestanding course applicants and half to degree programme applicants. The Admissions Office sends out information on the number of places available for admission and the detailed number of places available for admission well in advance of the deadline for setting the numbers.

Even if the detailed number of places available for admission is to be set, the number of places available for admission must always be set on the NyA website.

The NyA admissions system and the NyA website

The target number of students is not a compulsory input before selection and has no effect in the system. It can, however, serve as a planning tool. It is added on the NyA website.

When setting the number of places available for admission, you may sometimes choose to over-admit if you know that many students will drop out between the time of selection and the start of the course or degree programme. In this case, the number of places available for admission is set higher than the number of places available. The department decides how much over-admission is appropriate. The purpose of over-admission is to cut down on the number of people on the waiting list that need to be contacted. If the department knows from experience that not all of those admitted during the first selection will accept, over-admission can be a way to secure other interested applicants early on.

The decision to cancel a course or degree programme instance due to an insufficient number of qualified applicants is always to be made as quickly as possible and at the latest before selection and decision on admission. A decision on admission is considered to be a favourable decision and cannot be revoked under the Administrative Procedure Act.

Course and degree programme instances

In case of special circumstances, the faculty or equivalent unit responsible may decide to cancel a course or degree programme instance even if the applicants have already received an admission notification. However, the Admissions Office advises against cancelling an instance after an admission notification has been sent unless there are exceptional reasons.

*If the application deadline falls on a public holiday, the deadline will be moved to the next regular working day.
