Sustainable commuting

Lund University works to promote sustainable travel to and from work and studies. The aim is to increase the percentage of travel by bicycle and public transport and reduce commuting by car.

Lund University’s activities are based at a number of locations. In addition to Lund, there are also operations in Helsingborg, Malmö and Ljungbyhed, often located close to the city centre. This means that many employees at Lund University can already walk, cycle or take public transport to work. At the same time, there is also a need for more people to commute sustainably if we are to achieve our climate goals and also contribute to local, national and international climate goals.

Commuting by bicycle

A large number of employees at Lund University already commute by bicycle. According to the latest travel habits survey in 2022, approximately 33% of the employees in Lund and Malmö commute by bicycle and approximately 20% in Helsingborg. However, there needs to be a further increase in commuting by bicycle over the next few years to reach the goal of a climate-neutral campus.

Storage of batteries for electric bicycles

The University is developing solutions for the storage of electric bicycle batteries to make things easier for staff and students who commute by electric bicycle. A pilot project involving three electric bicycle battery cabinets for outdoor use is being conducted at the Faculty of Engineering (LTH). The lockers are located outside E Building, A Building and Kemicentrum. An evaluation of the cabinets will be carried out later in 2024 to support the work of creating additional storage facilities for electric bicycle batteries.

If there are any problems with the battery cabinets, report this using the Akademiska Hus app ‘Mitt campus’.

Cyclists to test super cycle path to Lund

From September to October 2024, Lund University take part in Innovation Skåne’s project ”Case Super Cycle Paths”. Lund University staff who live in Södra Sandby and work in Lund have been invited to take part in the project, in which researchers and students from the Faculty of Medicine and the Occupational Health Service also participate.

Super cycle paths in Skåne

A project is underway in Skåne to develop faster and safer cycle paths – super cycle paths – for commuting. Below are a few examples of the super cycle paths close to the University’s campus in Lund:

  • The cycle path from Södra Sandby to Lund (approximately 11 kilometres) follows an old railway embankment.
  • The Lomma-Lund and Lund-Dalby sections are currently being upgraded to meet the standard for a super cycle path. The work is expected to be finished in 2024.

Over the next few years, work will be carried out to complete sections such as Malmö-Lund, Lund-Staffanstorp, Lund-Kävlinge and Lund-Stångby.

The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has produced digital maps of cycle paths in Skåne. There are also paper maps available for cities such as Lund that can be collected from the City Library. The maps show connected networks of cycle paths and low-traffic volume roads.

Commuting by public transport

The public transport system is well developed in many parts of Skåne and a lot of employees therefore have the option of commuting by public transport. According to the latest travel habits survey in 2022, approximately 33% of staff in Lund commute by bus or train and around 40% in Malmö and Helsingborg. However, there is a need for more staff who currently commute by car to choose public transport instead.

Below are some examples of the easiest way to take public transport to some of our sites in Lund, Malmö and Helsingborg. More information on travel by public transport in Skåne can be found on the Skånetrafiken website. The easiest way to buy tickets is via Skånetrafiken’s mobile phone app. A tip for those who work at home to some extent and don’t commute to work every day is the “Flex 10/30 days” ticket, which includes ten 24-hour tickets that need to be used within 30 days.

Bicycle rental system

Lund and Malmö operate a bicycle rental system to facilitate commuting that involves using both a bicycle and public transport.

Commuting by car

According to the latest travel habits survey, approximately 25% of staff in Lund and Malmö commute by car, while the percentage in Helsingborg is somewhat lower.

Over a number of years, the University has reduced the number of parking spaces in Lund and the utilisation rate at many of the car parks is currently around 90%.

Park and ride

Brunnshög has a "park and ride" option where you can park for SEK 10 per day if you have a valid ticket to travel on Lund’s public transport. This could be a solution for those who usually commute by public transport but must sometimes drive to work. It is easy to park and then take the tram to the campus in Lund.

Electric car charging

Charging stations for electric cars are available at some of the University’s car parks in Lund adjacent to Elektroteknik, Kemicentrum and Geocentrum 2.

Overview of parking fees

In the autumn of 2023, there was an adjustment to parking fees in that VAT was introduced on semester permits. Work will continue in 2024 on the review of parking rules and fees with the aim of promoting sustainable travel.

Local travel

Trips taken in connection with work are to be as sustainable as possible. Many of Lund University’s units have bicycles that can be borrowed and for travel by public transport there is an option to create a corporate account to make business travel easier.

Travel habits survey 2022-2023

In the autumn of 2022, all staff members at Lund University were asked to take part in the travel habits survey. Almost 50% of staff members responded and of these almost 75% stated that they commuted in a sustainable way, i.e. by bicycle, public transport or on foot. Nearly 25% of respondents commuted by car, but there were some variations between the campuses. A mobility analysis from 2023 also found that just over 80% of staff live in areas where there is an option to commute sustainably.

CoAction – collaboration for a climate neutral Lund in 2030

CoAction, a collaborative project in Lund, has been running since the autumn of 2023. The project involves a collaboration between the municipality, the University, companies and organisations on transport and energy issues, so that together we can achieve the goal of climate neutrality. Lund University’s participation includes involvement in working groups focusing on future visions, cycling and car parks.
