Sustainable at Work: Academic Flying

Lund University has high ambitions for integrating sustainable development into its education, research, external engagement and organisational development, and has been ranked the third most sustainable university in the world. Being an internationally recognised university is often thought to necessitate a considerable amount of air travel. To meet the goals of reducing climate emissions from travel and emissions in line with the Paris Agreement, there needs to be a greater focus on behavioural change in academia. Welcome to a workshop where we will explore opportunities, challenges and solutions to change travel norms and reduce air travel in academia in general and at Lund University in particular.
Emissions from air travel at Lund University have decreased slightly in recent years but longer trips remain a major source of emissions. During this interactive seminar we will discuss:
- How can we be international and sustainable at the same time?
- Individual choices and/or systemic change, who is responsible?
- What arguments are used to defend extensive travel and how can we counter them?
- How do we change the norms and culture of academic travel?
Participants
The workshop will be moderated by Jenny Hansson, Sustainability Forum. The project group Big steps for a smaller footprint: Effectively reducing emissions from academic travel will participate in the discussions.
