National research study on sexual harassment at higher education institutions

Sexual harassment at work
Sexual harassment at work

In spring 2021, a large number of randomly selected employees, doctoral students and students at Sweden’s higher education institutions responded to a survey on sexual harassment and victimisation.

At the end of May, a report from the survey will be presented. I have already had the opportunity to read the results regarding Lund University.

At Lund University, the Tellus project started already in 2018, with the aim of reinforcing the University’s preventive work against sexual harassment. The Tellus project will continue to provide the University management with evidence-based knowledge for how to address these issues. I am happy about that.

The results that will now be presented in the national study coincide fairly well with the findings we have already seen from the Tellus project. Sexual harassment does occur at Lund University. Women are affected more often than men, but men are also affected. Lund University takes a zero tolerance approach to sexual harassment, harassment and victimisation and we take these issues extremely seriously.

Sexual harassment and harassment are a prioritised area in Lund University’s plan for gender equality and equal opportunities. During 2021, a team was formed in the central administration to work on supporting the faculties or equivalent units.

About the national research study on sexual harassment

The survey is part of a research study undertaken by Karolinska Institutet together with the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Malmö University and the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research at Gothenburg University. The study covered 38 higher education institutions around the country, where a separate selection was made for students, doctoral students and employees – both research staff and teaching staff, as well as technical and administrative staff.

The survey contained questions about experiences of various forms of unwanted sexual attention and experiences of threats, bullying and harassment.

About the Tellus project

The project began in 2018 as a response to the #metoo movement, with the aim of reinforcing preventive work against sexual harassment at the University. The project was implemented in stages. The project group comprises people with expertise in law, the work environment, psychology and sexual health. The University invested SEK 6 million over three years to implement the project. The research is funded by the Swedish Research Council. The aim of the project is to contribute to increased security, confidence and trust among employees and students at Lund University.

The whole report, ‟Tellus – Sexual Harassment, Harassment and Victimisation at Lund University: Results based on data from surveys, interviews and focus group discussions with employees, doctoral students and students” can now be downloaded below.
