Power outage affecting parts of campus on Friday now fixed

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Friday morning, several of the university's buildings lost power. The cause was a severed cable. By 9 a.m., the fault had been repaired.

At 7:54 a.m., an alarm was received regarding a power outage affecting Akademiska Hus, caused by a cable being dug up in north-eastern Lund. Among others, LTH, SOL, LUX and a number of other university premises were affected.

During the power outage, it was not possible to use the LU card, Wi-Fi was down, and in several places it was also unclear how fire alarms and signs for escape routes were affected and how long the backup power for these would last. In addition, coolers and other sensitive equipment were affected.

"This incident highlights the importance of organisations reviewing their continuity plans, crisis management and crisis communication. If the power outage had lasted longer, it might have been necessary to evacuate the premises and advise students and staff not to come in. In such cases, it is important to be prepared for how to communicate, especially when Wi-Fi is not working, says Jonas Midlöv, chief security officer at Lund University.

Not everyone has email on their phones. It may be a matter of having WhatsApp or team channels ready and having phone lists with private phone numbers so that key people can be reached quickly, he continues.

Akademiska Hus has announced that today's fault has now been rectified. However, the ventilation in the buildings has been affected and staff have therefore been sent to all affected buildings to rectify this. It is still safe to remain in the premises.
