Annual report for research 2023: Fantastic

The SDG Goals with the university building in front.

The year 2023 was a fantastic year for research at Lund University. The year can be summarised as 1825. In this case, it does not refer to the year 1825 and that our research has stagnated at the level it was then. Here, 1825 refers to four numbers:

1: Number one stands for a Nobel Prize – What a fantastic recognition for the incredible research conducted by Anne L'Huillier.

8: Number eight stands for Lund University being ranked eighth among the world’s universities regarding sustainable development in the QS World University Ranking: Sustainability.

2: Number two stands for Lund University’s environmental research being ranked second in the QS Sustainability ranking. The ranking is based on cited publications during the period 2017 to 2021 concerning the UN’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development (7, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15). Only the research at the National University of Singapore (NUS) was ranked higher. It is also interesting to note that even though QS calls the category “environmental research” all faculties have contributed with publications to these Agenda 2030 goals.

5: And finally, number five stands for Lund University being placed fifth in 2023 among the universities that received the most funding from Horizon Europe 2023. This is extremely gratifying, especially as we were number 23 on the list for Horizon 2020.

The numbers 1825 illustrate just how many people at the University have carried out excellent work. At the same time, they also provide indications of the interesting research that will be conducted in the future. This is most clearly apparent in number five: the over EUR 60 million that researchers received from Horizon Europe will lead to lots of exciting research. At the same time, Anne L'Huillier’s Nobel Prize and the excellent rankings for sustainability have created an increased international interest in research collaborations with Lund University.

The aim is for us to create conditions for even better research at Lund University in the future. We will therefore continue to implement the Research Strategy 2023-2026. We also hope that the Government will pursue a good research policy. Lund University’s opinion on the direction of future research policy is stated in the input on the Government’s research and innovation policies according to the University Board’s decision in October and in the answer to the consultation on the National Review Committee proposal for a new system for competitive public funding of research and innovation according to the Vice-Chancellor’s decision of 1 February.
