New collective bargaining agreement on working hours for researchers

From 1 January 2026, a new collective bargaining agreement on working hours for researchers and associate researchers at the University will take effect. As part of the agreement, these groups will transition to annual working hours.

The annual working hours entail a total of between 1,700 and 1,756 hours over the course of a calendar year, depending on the number of annual leave days. The workload may vary throughout the year, but the aim is to achieve as even a distribution as possible. Planning of annual working hours is to be carried out through dialogue between the staff member and their manager, and documented in a way that both parties consider suitable.

Since working hours are not allocated in advance, there is no entitlement to shortened work days or squeeze days. As a general rule, annual leave is scheduled from the Monday after Midsummer, unless agreed otherwise, according to the same procedure as teaching staff.

Does not apply at MAX IV

The new collective bargaining agreement applies to all researchers and associate researchers at the University, with the exception of those working at MAX IV. Negotiations are ongoing to find solutions that are adapted to the organisation’s needs. Until further notice, the current way of processing researchers’ working hours will continue.

More information about what the new collective bargaining agreement entails will be published on the Staff Pages early in 2026. Employees affected will receive more detailed information by email from their head of department or equivalent.
