Teaching career paths on the agenda of the new University-wide Council for educational development

The new University-wide Council for educational development has now had its first meeting. The introduction of the council was decided by the vice-chancellor at the end of May this year and, since then, the faculties have worked to appoint members.

The council, which I chair, includes Anders Sonesson, director of the Division for Higher Education Development (AHU) and a member from each faculty as well as two student representatives.

The council is tasked with developing the range of courses in teaching and learning in higher education, following up on development and needs for digital education systems, and evaluating the university-wide quality dialogues. The council’s remit also includes planning the general conference on teaching and learning in higher education, as well as assisting in monitoring developments in the field of teaching and learning in higher education.

In its recently implemented evaluation of our quality assurance systems, the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) chose to highlight this council in particular: they liked the idea of the council and saw significant scope to follow up on the teaching skills of academic staff at the strategic level, and opportunities for the faculties to learn from one another.

The council’s introductory meeting took place at the end of October; we discussed which issues to prioritise. We agreed that we would investigate the opportunities for a university-wide approach to teaching qualifications and teaching career paths. This is extremely topical as UKÄ has been entrusted by the government with investigating how Swedish higher education institutions work with qualification systems; the expert group on issues of teaching and learning in higher education of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions (SUHF) is to develop guidelines for teaching qualifications.

The second major issue we are to start on is to highlight experiences of digital tools from the rapid adaptation during the pandemic and to share experiences between the faculties.

The council reports to the Education Board but I will also report back here in LU News.
