According to the latest information about which organisations have obtained funding from the EU’s ninth framework programme for research “Horizon Europe”, the University has been awarded EUR 53 million, which is much more than any other higher education institution (HEI) in Sweden and 18th of all HEIs in Europe. The University is a participant in a total of 89 projects which have been awarded funding.
The greatest share of the funding comes from the European Research Council (ERC). In total, LU researchers have been awarded EUR 19.3 million for 15 ERC projects as part of Horizon Europe. We are also the first Swedish university to have over 100 projects receive ERC funding. Hurrah!
We have also made headway within “Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness” and the European Innovation Council, EIC. But there are possibilities to obtain even more funding.
Horizon Europe funding is important in many ways. It gives us to the chance to produce excellent and relevant research. ERC funding is viewed by many as the gold standard, proof that the research is of the highest order not just in Sweden but on a European level too. European collaboration gives us better conditions to increase our international impact. Our analyses show that publications written by researchers from several countries are more frequently cited. And finally, European research grants make us a little less dependent on Swedish public financing and the political weight given to research in the Swedish budgetary process.
A big thanks goes to everyone who has applied for funding from Horizon Europe and everyone who has provided support in these processes. You are the ones who achieved these fantastic results.
