Description

Bacterial infections represent a major global health issue and more detailed knowledge about host-bacteria interactions are needed to counteract the rising bacterial resistance to antibiotics. The Nordenfelt Lab uses unique biosensor technology in conjunction with advanced live imaging and image analysis techniques to study initial host-pathogen interactions. The molecular surface composition of bacteria and human cells are analyzed and related to each other at a single-bacterium level, allowing for a direct link between receptor activity and the number of molecules at each interaction site. With this information it is possible start unraveling the molecular basis for the first steps of bacterial pathogenesis. The overall goal of the research is through better understanding at the molecular level open up new targets for antibacterial treatments and diagnostics.
