Description

Bacteria and virus enter the lungs through inhalation or aspiration from the throat. We are protected by the immune defence but there are instances where the microbial invaders evade clearance, leading to pneumonia—a significant contributor to global hospitalization and mortality. Our research is intrinsically tied to addressing clinical needs: - What sets apart microbes that cause severe diseases from those that don't? - How do bacterial cells survive within the lungs, despite the challenges posed by the immune system? - Can the immunological responses triggered by bacterial cells be measured, providing diagnostic insights and a gauge of disease severity? - What factors influence the efficacy of detecting microbes in respiratory tract samples? - Which microbes in these samples are pathogens and which are commensals? Employing an array of microbiology techniques and data-intensive -omics methods, we’ll uncover the secrets within the microscopic realms of pulmonary health and disease.
