Environment and sustainability
Policy for sustainable development
Lund University's policy for sustainable development is the starting point for its environmental and sustainability work.
New strategy for sustainable development
The University has drawn up a proposal for a long-term sustainability strategy for 2019-2026 which, among other things, takes the UN’s global sustainability goals into account. The decision will be taken shortly on the matter and the strategy will then be published here.
The overarching objective in the strategy is proposed to be the following:
- Lund University integrates sustainable development in its education, research, external engagement and organisational development, and the University’s employees are well aware of their roles in this work.
- Lund University gets involved in local, regional, national and global societal arenas so that scientific knowledge can provide leverage in society’s efforts towards sustainability in both the short and long term.
- Lund University is a prominent voice in the field of sustainability within research and teaching as well as in public debate and cultural life.
- Lund University communicates its sustainability work within its own organisation and with wider society in ways that facilitate both outreach and access to the organisation.
Environmental action plan 2017–2019
For the period 2017–2019, Lund University has chosen to focus on the environmental impact from travel, purchasing, chemicals and premises. Based on this, the University has established environmental targets and decided to implement a number of measures to achieve these targets by 2019. Lund University’s environmental targets and action plan for 2017–2019 contains these targets and measures, as well as specific information on responsibilities and resources for the implementation of these measures.
Environmental certification system
The University contributes to a better environment by reducing its environmental impact, for example, by imposing environmental requirements on the goods and services we purchase, streamlining our use of energy, and properly handling our chemicals and hazardous waste.
One way that the departments are actively working to reduce their environmental impact is by becoming environmentally certified according to Lund University’s environmental certification systems.

Annual environmental report
At the beginning of every year, the University submits a report on its environmental management work to the Government (the Ministry of Education and Research) and to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. In the report, you can read about the University’s efforts over the past year to achieve the goals in the environmental action plan. The report also assesses the University’s contribution to progress towards the national and global goals.
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, which is the coordinating authority, subsequently compiles a report on the environmental management work of all public authorities, and a ranking.
