National evaluations

The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) is in charge of quality evaluation of Sweden’s higher education study programmes and courses. In 2016, UKÄ introduced a new quality assurance system for the review and quality enhancement of Swedish higher education. The work performed under the new system began in 2017. The Quality and Evaluation office provides advice and coordinates support in connection with the national evaluations.

New national system for quality evaluation

The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) describes in a report how the national system for quality assurance will work over the next six years. The system consists of four components:

  • Appraisal of applications for degree-awarding powers
  • Review of higher education institutions’ quality assurance processes
  • Programme evaluations
  • Thematic evaluations

The new system involves higher education institutions taking more responsibility than before in terms of internal quality assurance. Regarding the programme evaluations component, teacher training programmes and a selection of third-cycle programmes will be evaluated.

In 2017, a thematic evaluation of the higher education institutions’ efforts to promote sustainable development has also been conducted. As for the review of the institutions’ quality assurance processes, a pilot review of four institutions is currently underway before the component is fully implemented by UKÄ.

At Lund University, a quality assurance project has been initiated by the university-wide Education Board to meet these new requirements.

More information about UKÄ’s report is available on the UKÄ website

National evaluation of third-cycle education

In 2017, a number of third-cycle programmes at Lund University are being evaluated by UKÄ. The outcome of these evaluations is expected at the end of 2017. For more information, please contact Martin Nykvist, martin [dot] nykvist [at] stu [dot] lu [dot] se.
