Music in film production

Lund University has specially composed music that can be used in all types of films produced on the University’s behalf.

The music has been created to strengthen and unify the University’s communication, while enhancing the audience’s experience.

The aim of the music is to:

  • Save money and time on searching for suitable music
  • Reduce the risks of employees unlawfully using copyrighted material
  • Contribute to reinforcing the University brand through the use of a unique signature composition

Free to use

The music is free to use in all films produced on behalf of the University as a whole and/or parts of the organisation. The University owns the rights to the music, so any copyright problems are avoided while ensuring the quality of the music used.

You can use the music files in other types of productions as well, such as for conferences or podcasts. Please contact grafiskprofil [at] kommunikation [dot] lu [dot] se if you have any questions about this.

Different versions for different atmospheres and purposes

There are different versions based on what feeling you want to communicate, or what suits a specific context. Select the version you find best suited for your purpose and cut it to fit your production (the music is looped so that it can be cut and used in different lengths). The music can be used both as a background, in between speech elements, or as a complement to images and text with no speech. The file name indicates the intended purpose of each piece.

Classic and dynamic

The music has been produced by professional musicians and is based on the classical and dynamic dimensions, in harmony with the University’s graphic profile.

How to proceed

The music files are in wav format and can be included as a soundtrack in your film editing program. Examples of such programs are iMovie, Final Cut and Adobe Premiere.

Checklist for applying music to films

Source: Mirror Music.

1. Import your film
2. Adjust speech and background noise

The aim is that the speech should be heard as much as possible, and the background noise as little as possible. This can be done in different ways, but as a suggestion use the following two effects that affect the sound:

  • Add the effect limiter to your audio track. Limiter settings:
    • Max amp/output level: should be – 3 db.
    • Gain/input boost: adjust so that all the numbers in volume terms are between – 6 and 0 db.
  • Add the equaliser effect to your audio track. Equaliser settings:
    • There are controls here to adjust the volume to different frequencies.
    • All 100 Hz controls should be lowered as much as possible.

3. Choose music

  • Import music to your project.
  • Adjust so that there is music everywhere you want it.
  • Adjust so that there is balance in the volume between music and speech.

And finally: adjust the effects which have been added in step two if necessary.
