New project for the development of quality assurance systems for research

At the end of October, Lund University’s quality assurance of study programmes was approved by the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ). I think that Lund University should be happy and proud about this, but it is important to keep moving forward to continue developing our quality assurance systems. The next major area we need to work on is quality assurance of research.

In November, the vice-chancellor took the decision to implement the project entitled ‟Charting the components and processes for a quality assurance system for research at Lund University”. The aim is for the University to acquire an efficient, systematic and cohesive quality assurance system for research and for us to be well-prepared for future reviews.

A new six-year cycle for the review of higher education institutions’ quality assurance systems will be launched by UKÄ (the Swedish Higher Education Authority) during 2023. The review will cover the entire systematic quality assurance work of the higher education institutions, i.e. education, research studies and research, including external engagement.

Currently, we lack a comprehensive description or compilation of quality assurance systems for research. Likewise, there is no approved regulation or policy for quality assurance and quality enhancement of research at Lund University.

I am very pleased that Professor Bo-Anders Jönsson has agreed to lead the work on clarifying the University’s systematic quality assurance work to ensure and develop the quality of research. This will be done by charting, analysing and compiling components and processes at various levels within the University. Bo-Anders is very knowledgeable about quality issues and was previously a member of the expert group of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions (SUHF) which produced common guidelines for all universities in 2019 on quality assurance and quality enhancement of research.

Bo-Anders and the project group are to produce an overall description of what is to be included in a quality assurance system, identify any shortcomings in the present system and, if necessary, also provide suggestions for measures to address them. The project will be reported on in April 2022. Subsequently, work on addressing the shortcomings identified is to continue. / Per Mickwitz
