The EU framework programme for research and innovation

Horizon Europe is the EU’s framework programme for research and innovation for 2021–2027 with a total budget of close to EUR 95,5 billion. The programme is structured around three priorities: Excellent Science, Global Challenges and Industrial competitiveness and Innovative Europe.

Horizon Europe

1. Excellent Science

The programme is an initiative to reinforce the EU’s global position within research and innovation. It includes the following sub-programmes (links to follow).

ExcellentScience

  • European Research Council (ERC) – individual grants to outstanding junior and senior researchers
  • Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions – mobility programme
  • European Research Infrastructures including e-Infrastructures – provides access to European research infrastructure

2. Global challenges and Industrial leadership

The second pillar highlights the industry's crucial role in achieving the overall goals of Horizon Europe. Efforts within this pillar will support technological and industrial capacity to meet the global challenges by, among other things, prioritizing important enabling technologies.

3. Innovative Europe

Innovative Europe aim to stimulate market-creating breakthroughs and an ecosystems that facilitate innovation

European Innovation Council

The European Innovation Council (EIC) aims at identifying and supporting breakthrough technologies and game-changing innovations with the potential to scale up internationally and become market leaders.
