The University's Sustainability Plan has been revised and will now replace the previous plan. The Sustainability Plan more firmly establishes the areas and overall goals identified in the University’s Sustainability Strategy within first, second and third-cycle education, research, external engagement and management and administrative services.

As part of this revision, new goals and activities have been added and several Divisions within the organisation have been involved. The goal is that the University is to act as a role model for other universities and stakeholders in the transition to sustainable development. This includes continuous monitoring for what is happening around us and keeping an eye out for future developments within sustainability.

The revised Sustainability Plan has been drawn up with help from representatives from across the organisation; the central administration, Education Board, Research Board, Research Programmes Board, External Engagement Council and Sustainability Forum. Environmental manager Claes Nilén led the work in collaboration with project coordinator Cerina Wittbom on behalf of the university director.

“The dialogue on issues of sustainability we had along the way is at least as important as the finished plan. The intention of the plan is to specify what the University means by sustainability and for this to serve as a basis for more organisation-specific measures related to sustainability, just like the previous version of the plan,” says Claes Nihlén.

The Sustainability Plan should demonstrate that significant steps are being taken towards sustainable operations and a sustainable society. The plan is in line with the University’s Sustainable Development Policy and the principles of “practising what we preach”. It is to create the conditions for organisations to implement the measures required to achieve the objectives.

The University also wants to raise awareness of the sustainability goals and requirements that is has decided on. Overall, this will help us meet the University’s commitments. In addition to this university-wide plan, the faculties have their own action plans.

“What is particularly good about the Sustainability Plan is that it shows the breadth of our efforts on sustainability and reflects the commitment that exists on these important issues,” says Claes Nilén.
