The top of the main University building’s mid-section is flanked by two pairs of sphinxes. A recent inspection by SFV found that the concrete sphinxes had such large cracks that for safety reasons they must be taken down and recast.
Work will start shortly on the removal of the sphinxes from the roof. They will then be recast and the aim is that the four new sphinxes will be on the roof again in 2022.
The four sphinxes, which are 2.2 metres high, two metres wide and one metre deep, each weigh 3.5 tons. They are replicas of the main University building’s original sphinxes and have been in place on the roof since 1993.
