Tougher times for everyone, including universities

A calculator and a hand writing on a diagram.

The current recession is affecting everyone, and the University and central administration are no exceptions. We, like many other organisations, are affected by cutbacks and a tough economic climate.

The entire university sector is being asked to make savings of 0.5%. This is coming as inflation is high and many things have become more expensive: rents, equipment, licences, etc. Like other LU organisations, the central administration faces financial challenges. These difficult times mean that we need to prioritise more carefully, review our ambitions and work more efficiently. We need to ask ourselves: Of all the things we do, what is most important? Where can we lower our ambitions or what can we do less often? We also need to look at ways to increase our revenues.

During the spring, a review was conducted of the central administration resulting in a number of proposals. For example, those working on different aspects of security should be brought together, and improved support for digitalisation should be developed.

In order to promote collaboration within the University, a number of measures have been put forward. These include the creation of a virtual office for the administration to strengthen cooperation between the different divisions and find common points of contact. We are also reviewing the coordination of the Division of Finances and HR as well as university-wide events and celebrations to create more coherent and coordinated working methods.

University-wide communication activities, carried out by different parts of the central administration, are currently also undergoing a review. The investigator is tasked with conducting a general survey through interviews and proposing what the management, division of responsibilities, assignments and organisation of university-wide communication activities should look like in the future, in order to create processes that focus on the needs of the core activities in the best possible way.
